I had an experience yesterday that completely shook me to my core. I got to drive a Porsche 964 Carrera 2 through the backroads of Great Falls, VA. A thunderstorm rolled in 10 minutes into the drive. It was incredibly fun but I was playing it safe because my inexperience with a rear engined car.
Near the end of the drive the storm went away and the roads began to dry up. I started getting used to the car and it become much more fun. I still didn't want to push my luck so I wasn't driving as aggressively as I normally would on the twisties. It was still an incredible drive and made me lust after a Porsche like never before.
The Porsche belongs to my mechanic and isn't for sale. He just rebuilt the engine and refreshed the suspension so it was an amazing car to drive.
The 964 bug hit me hard, and to make matters worse I'm a HUGE RWB fan. Nakai San is easily one of my favorite enthusiasts and the work he produces is just phenomenal. I was almost up until dawn looking at RWB's and watching them being raced.
Naturally I began looking at 964's to see how feasible it would be to get one. I was happy with what I was seeing, except most the ads I was looking at aren't really current.
http://rennlist.com/forums/964-for…
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-s…
1)What can I expect to now pay for a good condition 964?
2)How hard would it be for someone who's never worked on/owned a Porsche to work on the car? Rennlist seems like a valuable resource that is filled with DIY's. I'm fairly mechanically inclined.
The 964 would not be my daily driver, although if I can find a nice enough one I'd love to DD it in nice weather.
Lastly, I'd eventually like to go down the RWB path. I understand the kit is $20k... I still think a molded RWB 964 is the best looking Porsche. I have a feeling I'll eventually settle for a different widebody kit, but I can dream haha.

I haven't ridden in one yet.....Hell I've only ridden in a 911, 944 and a 996.....-_-

"I have a Porsche"
is what every 944 owner says when someone asks what car they have.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 16:58 |
|
RWB fan, you say? I saw this one at a meet a few months back.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 16:58 |

My second option is to keep the car at my mechanics (family friend, which is why he let me drive his Porsche) shop 30-40 minutes away from where I live.
Definitely not ideal....
![]() 07/15/2014 at 16:59 |
|
I would not do that. It would keep me awake at night.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:15 |
|
Well first off, what kinda 964 are you after. This is the first crucial step. C2, C4 or Turbo? Or even RS America if you can find one. How much do you want to spend?
![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:15 |
|
exactly! The only time I would even think about doing that is during the winter when we have snow coming in. What's the point of having a car if you can't go drive it whenever you want?
![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:16 |
|
Same with every Boxster owner.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:17 |

HOT. West coast? I think this on is owned by Illest. Not 100% on that but it looks familiar.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:18 |
|
West Coast indeed! It was at the LTMW shop, who built the. Liberty Walk 458, GTR, M3, BRZ, etc....
![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:22 |
|
Hmm. Well I want RWD but at the same time I'd love the wide turbo body. A C2 with the turbo body would be ideal, if I can even find one lol.
I haven't really set a price yet as I'm not sure what good ones go for but how about low to mid twenties.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:24 |
|
I'm a big fan of the rocket bunny BRZ they built. Such a cool car!
![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:29 |
|
We'll start with the C2 then. A nice sorted out one will generally range from $22-34k according to my Porsche buyers guide. If you go on Porsche forums(Rennlist and Pelican Parts), you can find them in much better shape and at better prices as they're usually owned by PCA members online which saves you a ton. The C2 will offer the best value and daily driver, if you ever need it to do so.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:33 |
|
Yeah I posted two old ads from each. I'm likely gonna buy my car from a forum member because they tend to have the best cars at the best prices.
If I have to expand my budget to buy a nicer, lower mileage model I'd be willing to do so. They really do seem to be the best mix of classic porsche with modern features.

You can just see it in the edge of this shot
![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:46 |

EXACTLY
![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:47 |

That's exactly what they are; a modern 911 with classic looks.

I know, my dad's an idiot.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:48 |

![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:50 |

that 458 is gorgeous!
The BRZ is actually for sale
![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:52 |
|
Nope. For that price, you did good.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 17:58 |

I see. there were definitely other options he could have chosen, but for what it's worth, he did pick a good car.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 18:02 |

But not the best car.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 18:03 |

Now you're going to be addicted to multiple brands like me. Your bank account will hate you!!!
![]() 07/15/2014 at 18:04 |

And also, more importantly, he leased it...
But aside from that, he could've gotten any 911 that isn't a 991. A nice 997 of any type for whatever price you got the Boxtser for. Even a Cabrio!

DON'T YOU THINK I FUCKING KNOW THAT

![]() 07/15/2014 at 18:09 |

$25k for a 964 C2
$20k for an RWB kit
My bank account already hates my mind!!
![]() 07/15/2014 at 18:20 |
|
I guess the good thing is you can always do the RWB conversion later.
Maybe you'll love the C2 so much that you won't feel the need for RWB.
And maybe if you keep your eyes peeled you'll find a 964 project car for cheap that you can mod with the RWB kit.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 18:28 |
|
Yeah the RWB kit would be fitted waaaaay down the road. I'd probably be completely satisfied if I could find a C2 with a turbo body. If that doesn't happen, I'll enjoy the C2 while I get it into perfect mechanical condition. If I still have the RWB bug and $20k burning a hole in my bank account, I'll go that route. If I decide to settle for a much cheaper (many less than $5k) widebody kit I'll probably still be completely satisfied.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 18:54 |
|
I wonder how much wider you could go without flaring the fenders or changing the suspension geometry.
If you could just upgrade the stock wheels to slightly wider ones it would probably help grip and handling.
Porsche goes pretty conservative on the stock setup because they look at the C2 as the base car and want it to get good gas mileage. Using even slightly wider wheels and tires increases the rolling resistance and hurts mileage. They normally reserve the more aggressive setup for the Turbo, 4S, GT3, etc
![]() 07/15/2014 at 19:03 |
|
I'd love to eventually turbo a C2 as I really want RWD. Unless I do go RWB I won't throw crazy wide wheels on it. I'd probably run a squared 9.5 wide wheel on 265's or 275's. Most importantly I want to add just a few minor power mods before I do anything else.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 19:06 |
|
You should check to see if you can just do a RWD conversion on the Turbo!!!
I've researched this for some Porsche generations but not the 964.
Apparently it's super easy and painless to do a RWD conversion on the 996 Turbo.
It's also easy to do a RWD conversion on the R8!
![]() 07/15/2014 at 19:15 |
|
YES I'm really familiar with the 996 turbo RWD conversion!!! Easy enough that you can do it in your garage before a trackday.
I'll start researching that later tonight. If I could get a turbo I'd be happy enough to just leave it stock.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 20:15 |
|
If you saved up and bought a 993 Turbo you'd be a god amongst men!
![]() 07/15/2014 at 20:28 |
|
that's also not a bad idea. 993's will always be one of my favorites, I just never thought I'd be able to afford one! Saving would be worth it...
![]() 07/15/2014 at 21:21 |
|
The 993 Turbo prices have been going through the roof. The 993 Turbo S is insanely expensive.
If you can stretch and buy a 993 Turbo using financing then you should go for it. The car won't lose value if you keep it stock. You'll probably be able to put miles on it and still sell it for what you paid for it even though you put miles on it.
I've been spending so much money on cars that I'm starting to think about these things a lot more. Sometimes spending more is actually more responsible because you can have an asset that has a chance of appreciating instead of the standard situation where the asset depreciates even if you don't drive it.
The more rare and desirable a car is the better. Standard C2s like my car will probably never appreciate. And if they do it will be a long time from now. But certain Turbos, GT3s, etc. actually gain value. For example the 997 GT3s seem to be going up in value right now even though they're not classics or even near-classics yet.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 22:39 |
|
I wouldn't mind financing a 993 turbo. It would certainly allow me to raise my budget. With how often I look at cars, I wouldn't mind being able to make some money off of them.
E9x M3's will eventually appreciate being the only V8 M3, the last naturally aspirated M3, the last hydraulic steering M3, and for some people it's the last "real" M3 being a coupe. It's only one of the most reliable M3's so far. If you keep yours I think you'll definitely be able to sell it for a healthy amount. My 328i on the other hand...... If I had a manual LCI E91 THAT would be a good investment.
I'm not trying to make $30k flipping a car, I'm just trying to buy and enjoy a car that I'm not gonna lose a ton of money on.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 23:08 |
|
Manual LCI E91 would be sweet!
I feel the same way about appreciation. I'm not looking to flip for a profit (at least not yet). I'll be totally happy with just decreasing how much I lose...
If a car can appreciate enough to allow you to sell it for more than you paid for it and at least cover the maintenance costs then it's a free car!! And free cars sound cool to me!
Even if my E90 won't appreciate due to it being DCT and not having the CF roof I still would have a tough time selling it. Reason is that it's practical and like you said it's super reliable. Everything else I have or am likely to buy in the future is/will be more of a toy than a car. The E90 M3 is a full on "car" car. There really isn't anything that I need to do on any given day that it can't do.
![]() 07/15/2014 at 23:24 |
|
Perfect reason to just keep it! Did you ever sell that E46 by the way?
Having a car that appreciates so much that it's "free" is a dream. Eventually I'd also like to make some extra money flipping cars but at the moment I just don't have the time to deal with craigslist buyers haha.
Like I said, with how much time I spend looking at cars that I believe I can make money on, it would be nice to actually make some extra money.
On a smaller scale I might try to flip this local E39 525i. I've been watching it for about 2 months now. Originally they were asking just under $8k, now it's only $6995. Car has 89k on it and a clean title. Value is around $8500, but with how much trouble they've had selling it I'm gonna try to pick it up for $5k and list it on some forums for $8k.
![]() 07/16/2014 at 01:02 |

I know! Can't sell the E90 even though it would make it easier to get a new toy... My Dad would be pissed too. He has a zillion cars and not one practical car so he borrows it when he needs it. And my sister borrows it when she is in town.
I haven't sold the E46 yet. I should have but I started getting attached to it. I probably won't sell it until I'm itching bad for a new toy. I've been driving it a lot this summer because it's my only car that has tinted windows.
That 525i sounds like a good idea! A lot of CL sellers know nothing of forums or how to properly sell a car.

The E39 is actually at a high end Mercedes Benz dealership!
E90's are surprisingly practical, especially if you fold the seats down. I'm finally getting rid of the runflats tomorrow so I'm excited to take the long way home from the shop and really stretch her legs.
Who would've thought that the M3 would be the most practical car in anyone's fleet haha! Glad that you kept the E46, I keep seeing them bought cheap and either poorly modded or wrecked!
Your dad sounds like the opposite of mine. My dad (and my brother too) are all about practicality (read: boring automatic sedans). My dads in a V6 accord but I'm slowly talking him into a not boring sedan like a A7 TDI or an S6. My brother is in a 335i right now but he's a far-cry from an enthusiast. He's really interested in Tesla's though, and he's thinking about a Model S or waiting for a Model 3.

How funny the E39 is at a Benz dealership!
How do the new tires feel? Now you're like me and don't have runflats or a spare, lol
I found a Lambo online today that I'm in love with. It's a total unicorn that I've never seen in that configuration. God it's so nice...
Tell your family to buy GAS engine cars before they go extinct! Everything will eventually be TDI or EV. May as well drive gas guzzlers now while you can!

The new tires are GREAT. Besides being a little softer perfomance wise I'm in love. The grip is unreal! I actually haven't even though of not having a spare, I have triple A so if things go south at least I get a free tow!
Unicorn Lambo = good investment. That's how I see it, where's the link?!
I was talking to my mechanic while the tires were being mounted and everything and apparently my dad brought him a short wheelbase B7 alpina to do a PPI on a few weeks ago. WOW! I'm definitely gonna ask my dad about that tomorrow.

Glad the tires are working out well.
B7 Alpina!!!?!?!?! Holy crap
